Laser engraving is the decoration that makes a bamboo pen look like a bamboo pen. This is the choice worth getting right, and it costs six cents more per unit than print. Pad print puts opaque ink on top of the grain; it reads clearly but it sits on the surface and looks like a printed promo pen. Laser burns the mark into the bamboo itself, producing a darker brown that varies slightly with the grain underneath. On a material whose entire appeal is that it is natural, the engraving reads as part of the object rather than something applied to it. The trade is that you get one tone and no colour control — if your brand depends on an exact Pantone, print is the honest answer.

Rotary screen gives you double the print area for the same price. Most suppliers quote the pad print by default. Pad print on the barrel is 60 x 6mm, which is 360 square millimetres. Rotary screen is 60 x 12mm, which is 720 — twice the height, same $0.10 per unit. That extra 6mm is the difference between a single line of text and a logo with a tagline beneath it. There is also a 30 x 4mm clip position if you want a second, smaller mark.

Bamboo is a genuine material claim, and the refill is not. Worth stating plainly rather than letting the page imply otherwise. The bamboo is real, fast-growing and the reason this pen belongs in a sustainability-themed gift. The refill inside it is a standard plastic Parker-style cartridge with a tungsten carbide ball, exactly as in any other pen. What that does buy you is longevity: 800m of ink is roughly four times a cheap promotional pen, and a Parker-style cartridge is a standard size the recipient can actually replace at any stationer. A pen that gets refilled instead of binned is the strongest environmental argument this product has, and it is a practical one rather than a marketing one.

At under two dollars this is the volume item in the range. A 500-piece run lands around S$780 all in, which puts it in the same bracket as our HB graphite pencil but with a far longer working life and a more considered material. It suits conference delegate bags, sustainability and ESG events, university and campus campaigns, property and banking client packs, and any brief where a plastic pen would undercut the message. Add the kraft sleeve for eight cents if the pens are being handed over individually rather than scattered on a table.

The logo shown on the barrel in these images is a print mock-up, not a client order.
