The square box buys you the biggest print panel in this range. This is the reason to pick the twelve over the six, and it is worth doing the arithmetic before you choose. The set of twelve prints 55 x 55mm, which is 3,025 square millimetres. The set of six prints 30 x 65mm, which is 1,950. That is roughly 55 per cent more printable area, and because it is square rather than a narrow strip, a stacked logo with a tagline underneath actually fits. If your mark is a wide horizontal wordmark it will sit small inside a square panel and the six may frame it better. Check your lock-up against the shape, not just the area.

87mm pencils are a deliberate trade, not a cheaper pencil. These are half-length barrels, the same wood, core and finish as the full-size 175mm version. Adults notice the length; children do not, and a shorter barrel is easier for small hands to control. The practical gain is packing: at 88 x 90.5 x 8.5mm the box is flat and roughly square, so it drops into an A5 goodie bag, a welcome-pack envelope or a conference tote without bending or sticking out. The full-size set is 178mm long and dictates the bag around it. If the pencils travel inside something else you are already shipping, the twelve is the easier item.

Twelve colours is the threshold for an activity, six is a gesture. Worth being honest about which one you are running. Six covers the primaries and little else, which is fine as a desk token or a small add-on. Twelve gives you skin tones, greens that differ from each other, and enough range that a child can finish a colouring sheet without running out. If the gift is going into a family day, a school programme, a kids corner at a roadshow or a CSR activity where someone will sit down and use it on the spot, the colour count is what gets judged, not the barrel length.

Design for one colour on white card. The image here shows the box as it arrives: plain white, uncoated. A pad print lays down a single flat colour, so gradients, photographs, drop shadows and fine tonal work will not reproduce. Send a one-colour version of your mark, with solid shapes, clear counters and nothing thinner than about 0.3mm at final size. If you need full colour, the 78 x 48mm digital label is the alternative, though it reads as a label rather than as print on the box.

Your logo goes on the box, not on the pencils. Each barrel is stamped by the maker and cannot be overprinted. If the brief says “our logo on every pencil”, this is the wrong item and a plain unbranded set is the right one. Handing someone a STAEDTLER set says the giver did not cheap out, and the quality is visible on the barrel before anyone reads the box; the trade is that the recipient remembers the pencil brand as readily as yours.
