In This Guide
Most buyers of custom made soft toys in Singapore focus on three things: the design, the quantity, and the price. Fabric selection rarely comes up until the sample arrives and the client says — “it doesn’t feel like what I imagined.”
That gap between expectation and reality almost always traces back to one thing: nobody explained what the different plush fabrics actually feel, look, and behave like — and crucially, which branding methods work on which fabric. Sublimation printing on long-pile plush produces blurry, unusable results. Screen printing on certain fabrics loses adhesion after handling. These are not minor details. They affect whether your finished custom plush toys look professional or amateurish.
This guide covers every fabric type used in custom plush toy production in Singapore — with honest notes on what each one is best for, what it is not suitable for, and how your choice of fabric determines your choice of branding method.
Why Fabric Choice Matters More Than You Think
Your choice of fabric affects four things simultaneously:
01 — Perceived Quality
The moment a recipient touches the plush toy, the fabric communicates quality. Crystal velvet and minky feel premium. Standard velboa feels functional. Long-pile feels playful and soft. Each sends a different brand signal.
02 — Branding Compatibility
Not every branding method works on every fabric. Sublimation requires polyester. Embroidery works on all fabrics but stitches sink into long-pile. Screen printing needs a flat, low-texture surface. Get this wrong and your logo degrades.
03 — Colour Accuracy
Plush fabric is dyed in batches. Crystal velvet holds Pantone colour more accurately than long-pile fabrics, where the pile direction causes colour variance at different viewing angles.
04 — Unit Cost
Premium fabrics like minky add cost per unit. For a 500-piece order the difference is meaningful. Choosing the right fabric for your use case — not always the most expensive one — is the right commercial decision.
Crystal Velvet Fur
PREMIUM TIER
What it feels like
Crystal velvet fur has an extremely fine, dense pile — typically 2–3 mm height — with a characteristic shimmer when light catches the fibres at an angle. It is the softest fabric in standard plush production. Run your hand against the pile direction and it springs back immediately. The surface feels closer to velvet than to a traditional teddy bear.

Why it is the industry favourite for custom made plush toys
Crystal velvet fur is the single most common fabric used by professional plush toy manufacturers globally — and for good reason. Its 100% polyester composition makes it fully compatible with sublimation printing, which allows full-colour photographic-quality decoration on flat panels. Its short, dense pile holds embroidery thread without the stitches sinking or disappearing into the fabric, producing sharp, clean logos. Pantone colour matching is more achievable with crystal velvet than with any other plush fabric because the pile density is consistent across the bolt.
Best applications in Singapore
- Fully custom mascot plush where precise brand colour matching is required
- Premium VIP client gifts where tactile quality is the first impression
- Plush keychains where a compact, structured surface is needed for clean embroidery
- F&B brand mascots where the toy will be handled frequently by members of the public
Not ideal for: Orders where budget is tight and the tactile premium is not a brand requirement. The higher unit cost of crystal velvet only makes commercial sense when touch quality is a key part of the gift experience.
Minky (Ultra-Soft Plush)
PREMIUM TIER
What it feels like
Minky is the softest plush fabric available — softer than crystal velvet, closer in feel to a high-end microfibre blanket. The pile is slightly longer than crystal velvet (3–5 mm) and has a directional flow. When you stroke it one way it looks darker; stroke it the other way and it lightens. This optical effect gives minky toys a luxurious, almost velvety visual quality.

The branding constraint you need to know
Minky’s longer, directional pile creates a challenge for direct-on-fabric branding. Sublimation printing on minky produces noticeably softer-edged results than on crystal velvet — the ink settles between the pile fibres unevenly, blurring fine text and sharp logo edges. For minky plush toys that require a logo on the body, embroidery with a stabilising backing is the recommended method. Alternatively, branding via a sewn-on accessory (T-shirt, woven label, hang tag) sidesteps the fabric constraint entirely.
Best applications
- High-end client gifts and VIP gifting sets where tactile luxury is the primary brand signal
- Baby shower gifts and ROM door gifts where softness is emotionally important
- Retail collectibles where the premium feel justifies a higher retail price point
- Custom made plush toys where branding is carried by an accessory (T-shirt, gown, hang tag) rather than directly on the body
Not ideal for: Orders where a sharp, fine-detail logo needs to appear directly on the plush body. Use crystal velvet instead if direct-body sublimation or high-resolution embroidery is required.
Velboa (Standard Short-Pile)
VALUE TIER
What it feels like
Velboa is the most widely used plush fabric for mid-range custom soft toys globally. Its pile is short (1–2 mm), non-directional, and has a slightly smoother, more structured feel than crystal velvet. It does not have the shimmer of crystal velvet or the ultra-softness of minky, but it is durable, colour-fast, and easy to work with in production. Most stock plush toys in Singapore use velboa for the body.
Quick Specs
| Pile height | 1–2 mm |
| Composition | 100% polyester |
| Colour accuracy | Very good |
| Cost tier | Standard / Value |
| Sublimation | ✓ Good |
| Embroidery | ✓ Excellent |

Why velboa dominates stock plush production
Velboa’s short, consistent pile makes it the most versatile fabric for branding. Embroidery stitches sit clearly on the surface without sinking. Sublimation produces sharper results than on minky. Its non-directional pile means there is no colour-shift based on viewing angle, making it easier to achieve consistent visual results across a large production run. For most custom plush toys ordered for corporate gifting in Singapore — especially stock plush with T-shirts, graduation bears, and standard corporate mascots — velboa is the practical default choice.
Best applications
- Stock plush with custom T-shirts, bandanas, or accessories — the standard Singapore corporate gift format
- Graduation bears where durability and easy cleaning matter
- High-volume event giveaways where per-unit cost needs to be managed
- Any order where a direct-body sublimation print or sharp embroidery is required at an accessible price point
Recommended for: Most Singapore B2B and event orders. If you are not sure which fabric to specify, velboa is the reliable default that produces consistent, professional results across all standard branding methods.
Long-Pile Plush
SPECIALIST USE
What it feels like
Long-pile plush has a pile height of 10 mm and above — the fluffy, shaggy texture associated with novelty stuffed animals, large display mascots, and “fluffy” character toys. It is exceptionally soft and visually dramatic, but the longer pile means it is less structured than short-pile fabrics. Long-pile toys can look slightly different depending on how the pile is groomed after production.
Quick Specs
| Pile height | 10 mm+ |
| Composition | Polyester or acrylic blend |
| Colour accuracy | Moderate (pile-direction variance) |
| Cost tier | Mid–Premium |
| Sublimation | ✗ Not recommended |
| Embroidery | ⚠ Difficult — stitches sink |
| Screen print | ✗ Not suitable |
⚠️ Critical Branding Limitation
Long-pile plush is not suitable for direct-body branding via sublimation or screen printing. The deep pile absorbs and diffuses ink unevenly, producing blurred, unprofessional results. Embroidery is technically possible but requires a very thick stabilising backing and even then stitches may be partially obscured by the surrounding pile. If your custom plush toy order specifies long-pile fabric, plan for all branding to be carried by a sewn-on accessory (T-shirt, gown, bandana) or hang tag rather than on the body directly.
When long-pile is the right choice
Long-pile is the right choice when the visual and tactile drama of the fabric IS the product experience — oversized display mascots for retail environments, large plush characters for children’s events, jumbo stuffed animals used as photo props at roadshows. In these contexts, the branding is carried by scale and presence rather than a printed logo, and long-pile’s fluffy aesthetic is exactly what is needed.
Use long-pile for: Display mascots, photo-prop plush, children’s event characters, oversized prizes. Do not use for: Any order where a logo or text needs to appear directly on the plush body surface.
Fill Types: PP Cotton vs Bean Fill
The fill material determines the weight, shape retention, and posture of your custom made soft toy. Two fills are standard in Singapore plush production.
PP Cotton Fill
The universal standard
PP cotton (polypropylene cotton, also called polyester fibrefill) is the standard fill for virtually all custom plush toys in Singapore. It is lightweight, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, odourless, and washable. When compressed, it springs back to shape. Fill density can be adjusted — a tightly filled toy holds its shape better and feels firmer; a loosely filled toy is squishier and more huggable.
- Standard for all plush toy types
- Hypoallergenic and EN71-safe
- Shape-retaining when correctly densified
- Lightweight — important for keychain plush
Bean Fill (PVC or PE Pellets)
For weighted, poseable, or keychain plush
Bean fill uses small plastic pellets (PVC or PE) in the base or limbs of the toy, giving it a weighted, settled posture that allows it to sit upright on a desk without toppling. It is used in beanbag-style plush, plush keychains (where the weight creates a satisfying heft), and the base of standing mascot figures. Often combined with PP cotton — pellets in the base, cotton in the head and body.
- Creates natural sitting posture
- Adds satisfying weight to keychains
- Combined with PP cotton for mixed-fill toys
- Note: not suitable for children under 3 (pellet hazard if seams fail)
How Fabric Affects Your Branding Method
This is the most practically important section for anyone ordering customised soft toys in Singapore. Your fabric choice directly determines which branding methods are viable — and which will produce unusable results.
| Branding Method | Crystal Velvet | Minky | Velboa | Long-Pile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Embroidery (direct body) | ✓ Excellent | ✓ Good* | ✓ Excellent | ⚠ Difficult |
| Sublimation printing | ✓ Excellent | ⚠ Limited | ✓ Good | ✗ Not suitable |
| Screen printing (flat areas) | ⚠ Limited | ✗ Poor | ⚠ Viable* | ✗ Not suitable |
| Embroidery on sewn accessory (T-shirt) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Hang tag / woven label | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
* Minky embroidery requires a stabilising tear-away backing to prevent puckering. Velboa screen printing works best on large, flat panels such as the back panel of a T-shirt worn by the toy — not recommended directly on the toy body.
